M-bat

The M-BAT project focuses on developing, validating, and implementing advanced, sustainable, and eco-friendly technologies for the recovery, processing, and reuse of critical raw materials (such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite) within battery value chains.

The main goal of the project is to reduce the European Union’s heavy reliance on raw battery metal imports from third countries, enhance domestic European secondary processing capacities, and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy in raw materials. By establishing circular recycling pathways, M-BAT supports a green, sustainable, and equitable industrial transition.

Key Expected Results

• Demonstration of 4 innovative processes for producing battery-grade materials (graphite, Li, Co, Ni, Mn) validated at TRL6/7.
• Valorization of over 3 million tons of secondary resources (tailings, sludges, black mass) for battery metal recovery.
• 20% reduction in CO₂ footprint compared to conventional extraction and processing methods.
• Creation of at least 80 direct jobs and implementation of new circular business models.
• Development of detailed, actionable business plans for each technology process
