The features of the migration flows and approaches of their regulation in the EU

Abstract:

This article examines the features of the migration flows and approaches of their regulation in the EU. The main focus of our research is the actions and measures taken by EU institutions to resolve the problems caused by illegal migration within the EU. This article examines not only the character migration flows but also the potential drivers of this migration.

Beyond the study of integration dynamics within the EU, research on immigration policy should always bear in mind that these policies are interdependent from actual immigration movements. The immigration policy reflects actual migration and, at the same time, is a key element in shaping cross-border movements. As such, how EU member states have been confronted with migration should be considered. Insights into past and current migration movements to Europe show that all EU member states have been dealing with immigration in one way or another.

Trial and error has demonstrated that the treatment of the irregular migration crisis as either a humanitarian crisis or a security threat has proven ineffective and unsustainable. What is evident in moving forward is that the transnational and cross-continental nature of this issue requires a strong multilateral approach. This approach must take into consideration the interconnected nature of the wider Mediterranean basin and its specific socio-economic and geopolitical realities. At the heart of the irregular migration crisis, we are reminded of the Mediterranean’s reemergence as a focal point for world affairs in an age when multifarious hybrid conflicts and their associated borderless threats challenge normative state-centric perceptions on how to address such challenging situations.
